NMC Music Therapy Initiative

Friends and partners since the late 1990s, JB Music Therapy’s dedication and commitment to the National Music Centre (NMC) runs deep.

In recent years, NMC opened its permanent exhibition called Music & Wellness. This exhibit explores four themes: Music & Healing, Music & Support, Music & Culture, and Music & Memory.

The Music & Support theme covers music therapy and how music therapists help their patients with goals set by them and their families. Jennifer Buchanan shares her experience from her youth when she played “The White Cliffs of Dover” for her grandfather, who had memory issues. The song evoked strong emotions, and she sings a few verses as she tells the story.

In 2018, NMC partnered with JB Music Therapy and the Calgary Health Foundation (CHF) to expand music therapy programs in Acute Care Hospitals in Calgary. These programs address the unique needs of patients in neuro-rehabilitation, mental health, palliative care, and ICU. Through a range of techniques, including singing, vocalizing, instrument improvisation, and sensory exploration, improvements in feelings of anxiety, stress, as well as enhanced movements, memory, and motivations, are regularly observed.

After making an impact in Alberta, the emerging NMC Music Therapy Initiative is bringing the healing power of music therapy to individuals and families across Saskatchewan. This effort begins with a partnership with Ranch Ehrlo Society in Regina and the JP Children’s Hospital on their state-of-the-art NICU unit.

To help advance the NMC’s Music Therapy Initiative nationally, the Jim Pattison Foundation has generously pledged to match every dollar raised. To unlock these matching funds, we need your help to make the healing power of music accessible to more individuals in need. Every dollar raised will be matched.

By joining us in this exciting expansion journey, you are directly contributing to the well-being and quality of life of individuals across Canada who would benefit from music therapy.
